Martin: 'Baby death scenes were traumatic'

EastEnders star Derek Martin has admitted that filming the recent cot death storyline was "traumatic".The actor, who plays Charlie Slater in the BBC One soap, said that he knew the plot involving Ronnie switching her dead baby with Kat and Alfie's child would shock viewers.

He told the News of the World: "Filming the scenes was exceptionally heavy going. It was traumatic for everyone involved because we are all parents. Anyone dying is bad enough - even more so when it's a child. So I think we have to expect a viewer backlash."It was very emotional to film - a big thing for us all to take on. It was heavy going because of the content of the storyline and a baby death. It felt like emotion was pouring out of my mouth. You can be assured decisions to do a storyline like this are not taken lightly without the correct people being consulted."He added: "You walk away full of emotion and go to your dressing room in tears. I think less is more sometimes. The human imagination is a powerful thing - we don't need to see everything. I think it was right to edit it as they have."

Charlie will leave Albert Square after struggling to come to terms with the situation.
