Coronation Street to get first Chinese character

Corrie is getting its first ever Chinese resident next month.College graduate Xin will hit the cobbles, as Tina McIntyre's best friend. She'll work in Weatherfield's Chinese takeaway The Royal Panda, and will also move in with Tina and boyfriend Graeme Proctor, who were given a flat to rent by Dev after the tram crash last month.Bosses say Xin will have make friends with the locals, and will show off her memory by recognising everyone on the street by what they order from her work."I know you... you're sweet and sour chicken, fried rice and prawn crackers," she says to Roy Cropper. Insiders say Xin will also have some dark secrets that'll emerge in the coming months.British soaps have long been criticised for not having Chinese characters. Bosses hope Xin's arrival will broaden the ITV show's multi-cultural appeal.A source said: "Manchester has a big Chinatown and it's a crime that Corrie bosses have ignored it for so long. They hope Xin becomes a big character and that a whole family can be introduced."Chippy owner Mr Wong was the ITV soap's only previous Chinese character. He appeared only briefly and was written out in December 2005.
